So I've been doing some thinking while at PAX. Some of the ideas or notions that have gone through my mind are ones that I was already contemplating and a few have been refined a bit. For the one or two of you who are reading this, I'm guessing you've gathered that I've watched Caprica and this has given me a few ideas in some ways. So here we go-
1.First off sorry for the formatting and grammar I'm doing this off an Ipad.
2. If we just did a retread of BSG , it would be pretty boring. Now I think a few players probably want this, which is valid. If I could pull it off I would but I don't think I can and make it interesting. So you're probably asking what does this boil down to? I think it boils down to a few things
a) the nature of the Fall
b)the nature of the Cylons and their numbers
c)the nature of odd-Spiritual Realm/Prophets
With a) and b) , I think it's mainly to keep it more ambiguous. In the series it is rather set that the Colonies are completely screwed ; there are no survivors (etc. etc.), With the cylons it's established there are 12 humanoid models rather quickly and you kinda get a little bit more development with the hybrids. For me the problem with keeping to this is that there isn't much in terms of surprising the player or for the player to add. I mean sure I can have different cylon models but if I set to 12 then I'm stuck with that specific amount and y'know the variations that are in the series , that is aside from the skin jobs. Now this from my perspective. I think it's great to have the things in the series that worked (yeah through in number six) but I would like to be surprised a bit or at least attempt to see something a bit different and allow players to pursue that path and not simply through avoidance. This brings me to the setting.
Now with Acheron. I think one of the mistakes was adding a Colony. Partly because it becomes hard to manage and I think it clashes a bit thematically. The idea of a haunted station of sorts I think works .I do think it needs to be amped up quite a bit and made a bit more sci-fy so to speak, since in the other game Charon got more attention/action. And I'm more of the mind that a purely or almost purely artificial construct that is a haven for humanity but also serves as a bit of a purgatory has a bit more of a resonance.
