the Twelve Colonies, and the Universe as a whole...

I've noticed this myself. That BSG leaves things rather vague in terms of dates and such. So this post is to help you ,the player, navigate through Acheron and the BSG by giving you a set of tools or at least a vocabulary. I'm setting a few things in stone mainly to help you, me and anyone (if there is anyone reading the thread) have a better comprehension of events.

Also to allow you the player to establish more of an identity if you so desire, I'll include somewhat detailed (alternative universe) histories of the planets. Hopefully they become more detailed in time.

Time and Dates[/b]

This section isn't a history lesson as it is about telling time. The show has a few oddities between it's own 5 digit records used on props and it's 2 digit system used on the Caprica series. For the sake of this game.

We'll assume that we are marking time based on how long it has been since the Exodus from Kobol , which supposedly occurred some 2,000 years ago from the current date. Making the current the date approximately

2056 AE

24 hours per day. A.M and P.M all of that is the same.

Depending on where you are you may notice time being observed on a decade cycle. That is it resets at 0 upon reaching the hundredth year. When time is being observed as such you will notice it as

The observation of time could be interpreted somewhat cryptically in that we are slaves to fate ala "The Cycle of Time"

The Cycle of Time, or the Cycle, is a pattern of events which has repeated itself several times. Each iteration of the cycle starts when a civilization creates intelligent biological or mechanical beings. These being rebel against their masters, resulting in a devastating war which typically results in the loss of technology. In at least some iterations of the cycle, otherworldly beings and prophetic visions guide a few individuals to ensure that a divine plan is carried out. The survivors on one or both sides of the conflict engage in a mass exodus, and eventually repeat the cycle.

The Workings of the Twelve Colonies

The Government of Twelve Colonies is a federal republic that was established 52 years ago during the Cylon War.

Each Colony Operates Independently and has Laws regarding various areas of Life as well as Attitudes Towards Other Colonies that Will be Discussed.


[/li][li] Most wars , the Cylon War being an exception, do not occur on an interplanetary level. They are usually limited to what would be called "civil" wars, since each insular colony is largely unified (aside from the obvious aforementioned internal strife). This is why you have such differing views regarding and individual such as Zarek (it didn't affect worlds outside of his own....well not as nearly nearly as intimately.... ) .


Aerilon

An agricultural planet known for being responsible for at one point supplying over 80% of the Twelve Colonies produce. Despite this the Colony remains extremely poor, leading some to speculate they have been exploited. The Aerilons are largely on good terms with the other Colonies so this line of thought has not gone far with local politicians. Likely because they don't have the means (read: technology or man power ) to do anything about it.

Worship of Aeries is common.

Aquaria
aka the Water Planet has no official center of power. Known for holding communal meetings weekly in which all are invited to attend (citizen and non). Aquaria can be viewed as a rather progressive Colony or at least communally minded.

The population on Aquaria is very small compared to the rest of the colonies and considered by some to be little more than an scientific research outpost. Although there are various small communities located on the various land masses. As well as a few small volcanic land masses.

One hears the occasional story of the adventurer curious to brave the seas of Aquaria. Usually such stories end poorly.

Canceron
Capital :Hades

An overpopulated and humid colony that had earned the nickname "The Largest Democracy" due to the size of its population. Canceron had no shortage of slums in its cities and some view the Democratic colony as little more than a corrupt Oligarchy.

Caprica

Caprica was the central seat of power of the current administration, as well as one of the wealthiest colonies. It's planet was balanced in terms of land mass, climate and abundance of resource. But it was also a melting pot of various degrees of religious fervor which led to various degrees of civil unrest and violence.


Gemenon
An arid and xeric red world that shared it's orbit with Caprica. Gemenon is a colony known for it's literal interpretation of the Scriptures. In addition they are one of the poorer Colonies.

Leonis


Libran

Home of the Inter-Colonial Court . They, like Aquaria , have no Capital. While they are one of the richer Colonies and are known largely for having established what we now know as the sport of Pyramid today. Libran is considered an undesirable place to live by many.

Terminology

Alcohol

• Hawryliw= Liquor Manufacturer
  
• Ambrosia= Alcoholic Beverage. Typically green in hue.
  
• Leonis Estates Sparkling Wine = A type of sparkling wine produced on the colony Leonis.
  
• Virgon Brew= Microbrewery Beer

Medicine and Medical Supplies

• Antibiotics
  
• Anti-Radiation Medication
  
• Bittamucin=a drug used to cure and as an inoculant against Mellorak infection.
  
• Bloodstopper=powder-based cauterizing agent used to prevent wounds from bleeding
  
• Burdock Root= a calmative use for the sick primarily used by people who don't believe in the use of medicine (e.g. Sagittarons)
  
• Chamalla= used by oracles for its hallucinogenic properties , but it is also known to help some diseases(e.g. cancer).
  
• Doloxan= a form of chemotherapy to treat cancer.
  
• Interrogation Drug = A Hallucinogen that causes the victim to feel high anxiety
  
• Morpha = morphine
  
• Serisone= part of medkits, prevents fluid buildup in lungs.
  
• Sleeping Pills
  
• Stims= Amphetamine used by the Colonial Fleet and presumably the Marine Corp when needed.

• Fumarella Leaf= Equivalent of Tobacco

Major Terms to Know

• Cubit= form of government regulated currency through the Twelve Colonies.
  
• Holoband=A Holoband is a user interface technology that allows for seemingly fully immersive virtual reality.
  
• Pyramid= popular ball game
  
• Tylium=Tylium is a material used to fuel the propulsion systems of Colonial and Cylon spacecraft. Three forms are known of: tylium ore, refined tylium precursor, and refined tylium (the fuel itself).
  
• Triad = card game similar to poker
